The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas, is a beloved community asset. Established in 1971 by the Town Lake Beautification Committee, including Lady Bird Johnson, Ann Butler, and Mayor Roy Butler, the Trail has evolved into a vital urban retreat, welcoming millions of visitors annually for restorative and recreational activities. Today, The Trail Conservancy (TTC) continues its mission: “to Protect, Enhance, and Connect the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake for the benefit of all.”
As part of its mission, TTC identified the fitness station at Riverside and Lamar as a priority for renovation. The outdated equipment—limited to a pair of pull-up bars—was deteriorated, inaccessible, and poorly suited for diverse exercise needs. The pandemic further underscored the urgency for an improved outdoor fitness amenity that could support physical and mental well-being.
The redesign prioritized durability, flexibility, and inclusivity, guided by research on national best practices and input from the local community. Following guidelines from The Mayo Clinic, the project expanded the station’s capabilities to support five key fitness objectives: Muscle Strength, Core Strength, Aerobic Exercise, Balance, and Flexibility. Public feedback during a virtual open house and survey revealed a preference for traditional fitness equipment, leading to the selection of four versatile pieces of dynamic equipment.
The renovation also addressed significant technical challenges. Trail access had to remain uninterrupted, and the site design had to adhere to strict constraints, including the Critical Water Quality Zone and square footage limits for new construction. To meet these challenges, the fitness station was split into two zones along the trail corridor. The upgrades included solar-powered site lighting, a chilled drinking fountain with accessible and pet-level bubblers, and a comfortable sitting area shaded by existing and newly planted trees.
The fitness zone’s surfaces were upgraded from decomposed granite to a combination of engineered wood fiber (EWF) and recycled rubber tiles, providing a stable and safe base for exercises. Both materials passed fall-protection standards and offer ease of maintenance compared to poured-in-place rubber.
Landscaping enhancements aligned with community feedback, creating a shaded, welcoming respite. Drought-tolerant plants such as Yucca, Turk’s Cap, Inland Sea Oats, and Salvia now enrich the trail’s landscape while reducing water requirements. Solar-powered features eliminate the need for offsite electrical connections, reducing long-term maintenance.
The project was made possible through generous contributions from donors, including Love, Tito’s and Kiki Price Shoes, recognized on a prominently placed plaque. Additional community donations were honored with personalized pavers in the sitting area.
Since its completion, the Butler Shores Fitness Station has become a thriving hub for exercise and relaxation, embodying TTC’s mission to connect the trail to its community. The station’s modernized equipment, thoughtful layout, and sustainable features ensure it will remain a valued amenity for years to come.
